Another Doall Worker Abused and Fired

  "They mistreat you for the fun of it"

On Tuesday, June 29 at 7:30 a.m., Maria Luisa Castillo was fired by from Doall 2 by Mr. Pac after failing to show up on Saturday the 26th for her 4-hour shift (7 a.m.-11 a.m.) to stay home with her sick child. Maria had asked permission from her supervisor the day before (Friday, June 25) but was denied. The following Monday, June 28 at 7 a.m., Maria's supervisor, Blanca Estela, told her she was being punished for abandoning her work that Saturday and sent her home for the day.  When Maria tried to explain that she was unable to come to work because her daughter was sick, Maria's supervisor responded that it was not her problem. On Tuesday, Ms. Castillo returned to work but after working a few hours Mr. Pac came to tell her she was fired, calling her a prostitute. 

The next day, Wednesday, June 30, Ms. Castillo went to the Ministry of Labor to receive her "calculations." However, when Maria returned to Doall 2 on July 1 to claim her severance pay of 1,775.33 colones and her back pay of 694 colones, Mr. Milara, a Doall accountant and head of personnel, told her to talk to Mr. Ernesto Aguilar Sarmiento; he offered her 600 colones and told her he would try to find her another job. However, when Ms. Castillo went to pick up her money, she was met by Mr. Lee, the head of the accounting department, who tore up her calculations and her identification card, saying he would not give her even five colones. 

Unfortunately, Maria's firing is not her first experience with maltreatment while working at the Doall 2 factory. Approximately two months ago, Maria was chastised for spending too much time in the restroom. At Doall 2 all visits to the restroom are timed with a stopwatch. If an employee spends more than five minutes inside, they are punished. On this particular day, Maria spent more than five minutes using the facilities. Afterwards, Mr. Pac told her that because she spent too much time using the bathroom she would have to spend the rest of the day standing outside in the hot sun with the guards. When Maria said she would not go, Mr. Pac spit in her face, telling her to go home. However, Maria stood her ground and refused to leave the factory. Finally, she was allowed to continue working the rest of the day. However, supervisors commonly abuse workers, often throwing clothing at their faces. 

Liz Claiborne maintains close contact with the Doall 2 Factory, and has sent representatives to train Doall workers (Maria Luisa included) on how to properly inspect Liz Claiborne clothing. 

Maria Luisa Ayala Castillo is currently receiving legal aid from a lawyer at CODEFAM.

The Doall #2 factory currently produces men's and women's dress jackets and pants under contract with Liz Claiborne, Perry Ellis, and Robyn. 

The "regular" work hours are from 6:50 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, though it is not uncommon for the workers to be forced to remain until 8, 9, or 10 p.m. On Saturday, the shift is from 6:50 a.m. to 11 a.m.
