RE:  Update: Improvements at Classic Factory in Jordan, producing for U.S. Companies


In response to an October 2010 Institute/NLC report documenting illegal sweatshop conditions at Jordan's largest garment factory, Classic Fashion Apparel, workers report some significant improvements.  Classic sews garments for Wal-Mart, Hanes, Macy's and others.


* After being routinely forced to toil seven days a week, workers now have one day off each week, on Friday, which is the legal holiday.

* Instead of working from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 or 10:30 p.m. each day, workers now get out at 9:00 or 9:30 p.m.

* Weekly forced 24 1/2 hour all-night shifts from 7:30 a.m. straight through to 8:00 a.m. the following day have been suspended.  Instead of being kept at the factory up to 99 1/2 hours each week, workers are now at the factory 81 hours--which is a significant improvement.

* Workers now have access to hot water in their dorms, which is critical given the near freezing temperatures during Jordan's winters.

* Factory shop floors as well as bathrooms are now routinely cleaned.

* Workers report that supervisors are nowhere near as abusive as they were in the past, and worker treatment has significantly improved.

* Women workers are no longer locked in their dormitory compounds and are now permitted to leave their dormitories in order to shop and meet friends.

* Classic was closed for four days during the Eid religious holiday--from November 16 to 19--and workers were paid their October wages on November 15.  (In the past, Classic management routinely withheld the workers' wages for three to four weeks.)


We recognize these as important steps forward and hope that significant improvements continue.
